Control Systems Engineer

An exciting opportunity to design, develop, install, manage, and maintain equipment and systems used to monitor, regulate, and control Water and Waste Water processes.

• Create and document control system architectures using PLCs, HMIs, DCS, SCADA, etc.

• Install hardware/software, conduct functional and performance tests, calibrate devices.

• Maintain systems, diagnose faults, reboot faulty instrumentation, minimize downtime through root-cause analysis.

• Operate within health & safety regulations and relevant quality standards.

• Collect process data, prepare technical reports, propose optimizations/improvements.

• Provide training and continued support to end-users, ensuring effective system utilization and troubleshooting.

• Ensure that SCADA systems comply with industry standards and guidelines for automation, data management, and cybersecurity.

Graduate Engineer

We are looking for a motivated engineering or computing graduate to join DCL as a Graduate Control Systems Engineer. You will learn to configure, test and commission SCADA, PLC and RTU systems used on water treatment works, sewage treatment works and remote pumping stations.

This is a structured development role. You will start with desk-based configuration and testing under supervision, then progress to site surveys, commissioning and client-facing work as your competence grows. The aim is to develop you towards a System Engineer role and, in time, professional registration with a recognised engineering institution.

Key responsibilities

• Configure and test SCADA databases, mimics and alarms on platforms such as AVEVA System Platform, InTouch and GeoSCADA (ClearSCADA).

• Support RTU configuration and migration work, including remote outstations and industry-standard telemetry and communication protocols such as DNP3, WITS DNP3, Modbus, and OPC.

• Assist with PLC and RTU logic changes, including reading and modifying IEC 61131-3 code (e.g. ISaGRAF, function block diagram, structured text).

• Carry out I/O and signal checks, point-to-point testing and data validation against survey and design records.

• Support Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT), Site Acceptance Tests (SAT) and commissioning on operational water and wastewater sites.

• Produce and maintain engineering documentation: test sheets, I/O schedules, functional design inputs, as-built records and change requests.

• Help develop and use DCL's in-house Python and C# tools that automate SCADA validation and data checking.

• Follow OT cyber security practice (IEC 62443 principles) and DCL's ISO 9001, 45001 and 27001 procedures, including safe systems of work on site.

• Work with Water operations and project teams, building good working relationships with clients and site staff.
